TIGER’S OUT: It turns out that Tiger Woods played the U.S. Open (against his doctor’s advice) with a torn ligament and a double stress fracture in his left leg. He faces a second surgery that will keep him out for the rest of the golf season. That may not bode well for ticket sales to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.
Hoola Hoop Turns 50 An American pop-culture craze of the past celebrated 50 years yesterday.
"USA Today" reports the hollow plastic circle, otherwise known as the Hula Hoop, is marking its anniversary today, the day its inventors sought the Hula Hoop trademark.
Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin based their creation on a similar toy that Australian school children appeared to enjoy.
Within a year, their Wham-O company had sold over 100-million Hula Hoops at a dollar-98-cents each.
TAP IS BACK Tap water is making a comeback. In today’s economy, you find yourself opting to drink water that comes straight from the sink. The lousy economy seems to be weaning people off the disposable plastic bottles of water that were sold as stylish, portable, healthier and safer than water from the tap.
**FYI: U.S. consumers spent $16.8 billion on bottled water in 2007, up 12% from the year before.
Phoner: Is bottled water a rip-off?
EXCUSES FOR RUNNING LATE Some people wake up each morning before the alarm rings, glad to see the glowing sun and excited to start the day. They arrive to work whistling and are hard at work before most people even arrive. However, this isn’t the case for everyone. One out of six (15%) workers admit to arriving late at least once a week, according to a recent CareerBuilder.com survey.
You might be surprised that the snooze button is not the primary culprit of tardiness. One third (32%) of workers attribute their late arrivals to traffic gridlock. One of of six again (17%) claim a lack of sleep is the reason, and one in fourteen (7%) percent have trouble arriving on time because they need to get their children ready for school or day care. Other issues, like forgetting something at home or not feeling well, are also popular.
**Some of Worst Excuses:
1. While rowing across the river to work, I got lost in the fog.
2. Someone stole all my daffodils.
3. I have transient amnesia and couldn’t remember my job.
4. The line was too long at Starbucks.
5. I was trying to get my gun back from the police.
DON’T TOUCH When you're out with a baby, it's common for a well-meaning stranger to coo and smile at the little one. These are the wise, nice strangers that can make your day.
Then there's the other category of baby-loving stranger. This kind is oblivious to personal boundaries and germ-spreading and will lean into car seats or carriers and grab their hands and/or breathe all over your child.
MyTinyHands.com has come up with a product that politely asks strangers to keep their hands off your baby. The sign reads, “Please wash your hands before touching me” and comes in many colors.
*** On the web and also on the web - tiny hands.
