To Cut Your Grocery Bill, Skip The Grocery Store - Ever-increasing food costs at grocery stores have strained Americans' wallets. But now, some are skipping the supermarket entirely and going straight to the source in hopes of easing their pocketbook pain while ensuring they get the freshest food.
Save more than $1,000 a year by buying the entire pig, cow or lamb. Community supported agriculture may not be a new idea, but it's gaining traction across the country, in places such as Sandy Spring, Md. There, a group banded together six years ago to buy directly from a local farmer.
Carolyn Heeley, a mother of two, originally joined the group because the vegetables are organic. "In the beginning, I thought it was a little pricier, but I didn't care because it was better quality," she said. "It was healthier for my kids." But now that grocery store produce prices have risen dramatically, Heeley said she's saving a lot of money. She said, "Financially, it's much better."
TAP IS BACK Tap water is making a comeback. In today’s economy, you find yourself opting to drink water that comes straight from the sink. The lousy economy seems to be weaning people off the disposable plastic bottles of water that were sold as stylish, portable, healthier and safer than water from the tap.
**FYI: U.S. consumers spent $16.8 billion on bottled water in 2007, up 12% from the year before.

Some Signs Of Pump Relief: If you are "Tired of high gas prices?" Ten ways to save.
Properly inflated tires, driving slower, and emptying out the trunk among the best ways to avoid excessive trips to the pump.
--- 1. Feed the Michelin Man! One out of every 3 cars on the road in the United States has at least one underinflated tire.
--- 2. Your car is not a moving closet. Consider that every 100 pounds you add to the trunk reduces fuel efficiency by 1 to 2 percent.
--- 3. Don't move the junk in your trunk to the roof.
--- 4. You're not a race-car driver. Slow down.
--- 5. Make peace with the A/C. Times – and cars – have changed, so dads can loosen their grip on the air-conditioning controls. Don't drive with the windows down.
--- 6. Get to know your mechanic.
--- 7. Forget the drive-through. Idleing is expensive.
--- 8. Map it twice, drive there once.
--- 9. Say no to premium gas. Unless your car requires it, don't buy premium gas.
--- 10. Play the market. No official rules exist dictating when gas stations raise or lower prices. But if fuel prices are trending up, most stations post new rates just before the weekend.
CASH ONLY Gas station operators nationwide are feeling the squeeze because of the fact that it costs them money each time someone fills up and pays with a credit card because of the related fees they have to pay. So many are saying, "No more credit cards."
Complaints target the so-called interchange fee -- a percentage of the sale price paid to credit card companies on every transaction. The percentage is fixed -- usually at just under 2 percent -- but the dollar amount of the fee rises with the price of the goods or services. As gas tops $4 a gallon, that pushes fees toward 10 cents a gallon.
Phoner: Do you pay for gas any way other than credit?
SLOWING DOWN Americans drove around 4.5 billion fewer miles in April compared with the same month last year, marking the lowest mileage clocked on US roads for the month since 2003.
The Federal Highway Administration said in its monthly report that the number of vehicle miles driven in the United States fell by 1.8 percent, to 245.9 billion.
BIG BREAKFAST WebMD is reporting a study showing that eating a 600-calorie breakfast rich in carbohydrates and protein helps dieters lose more weight long term than eating a modest breakfast and following a lower-carb eating plan. This study backs up what many have said for years -- that breakfast and weight loss are linked.
**FYI: You may have heard about “The Royal Diet”: Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen, and supper like a pauper. It helps you feel less hungry before lunch and all day.
Phoner: What do you usually do for breakfast?
GONE TOMORROW Want to know how much hair you're losing? Start counting the hairs on your comb, not on your head. In the June issue of Archives of Dermatology , scientists demonstrate that a so-called "60-second hair count" is a simple and reliable away to get a grip on whether you're balding and, if so, how fast. The reality is that hair loss is incredibly common among men and women. Fifty percent of both genders will have hair loss by the age of 50.
**FYI: How to perform the count: Comb your hair for 60 seconds over a pillow or sheet of contrasting color before shampooing. Pull the comb from the back top of the scalp forward to the front of the scalp for 60 seconds.
Repeat the procedure before three consecutive shampooing sessions, always using the same comb. Count and record the number of hairs in the comb and on the pillow or sheet. Repeat the procedure every month and discuss results with your dermatologist.
